Melted Milk Tragedy at Home
We went away for the weekend — our first family home vacation. Ryan had Friday off, so we planned to leave a little early to get a head start. I woke up, started a pot of coffee, and went about getting ready. When the coffee finished brewing, I opened the refrigerator to grab the melted milk story. That’s when I noticed the freezer door was open.
Recently, we had developed the habit of treating ourselves to ice cream, a craving left over from my pregnancy. The night before, we picked up dinner and some Ben & Jerry’s to celebrate the start of our little getaway. Unfortunately, I had overpacked the freezer with bread I had baked earlier that day. When Ryan put the ice cream away, the door didn’t close properly — and that mistake changed my morning completely.
Realizing the Problem
Inside, I found about 40 ounces of frozen milk — milk I had pumped with care and pride. I was building a small stash to support my baby, Will, when I returned to work. The thought of losing that hard-earned supply made my heart sink.
At that moment, I panicked. Tears filled my eyes as I realized the milk was slushy and partially thawed. For a moment, I thought I had to throw everything away. Thankfully, Ryan quickly searched online and found that if the milk was still partially frozen, it could be saved. That gave me a little hope.
Seeking Help and Support
Still anxious, I reached out on Twitter, hoping friends might have answers. I even called two lactation consultants and a La Leche League leader, but no one answered right away. The silence made me even more frustrated.
Earlier that week, my friend Julie had encouraged me to stay consistent with pumping. She motivated me to stay positive. Thinking about that conversation, I felt crushed seeing my effort literally melt away.
Soon, the League leader called back, and both Julie and another friend saw my posts and replied with comforting advice. The lactation consultant called later too. Thanks to all of them, I learned I could refreeze most of the milk safely. I only had to discard about 10 ounces. The rest went back into the freezer, and I used some of the defrosted milk to help Will practice bottle feeding. Although he wasn’t thrilled, he made some progress — and that felt like a small victory.
A Weekend That Changed Everything
After handling the crisis, we finally left for our trip and had a lovely time. It felt good to get away as a family. Once we were on our way, I decided to delete Twitter from my phone. I wanted to focus on Ryan and Will instead of constant notifications.
However, on our return trip, I checked Instagram and noticed a few unusual comments. Something didn’t feel right. Because I had deleted Twitter, I went to Facebook instead — and what I saw there froze me completely.
People were leaving prayers on my friend Julie’s page for her and her daughter, Preslee. But strangely, no one mentioned her husband, Matt. My stomach turned. I quickly searched online since Matt was a well-known news anchor. My fears came true — Matt had died in a tragic car accident that Saturday night.
Life Lessons Through Loss
There were no words for the pain I felt for her. Just days earlier, we had talked about her new home and how she was enjoying time with her family. Suddenly, her world had completely changed.
That moment taught me something powerful. I realized that my earlier meltdown over the melted milk story was nothing compared to what she was facing. Life can shift in seconds, and we often take our blessings for granted.
The Power of Community
Despite the heartbreak, I saw incredible kindness online. Friends and strangers united to raise money for Julie’s family. What started as a small plan to send flowers turned into contributions for Preslee’s college fund. Later, an online auction was organized to support them even more.
Through it all, I learned that even in tragedy, love finds a way to shine. My weekend began with melted milk story and tears, but it ended with perspective, compassion, and gratitude for the life and love I still have.
